UNESCO Calls for Immediate Implementation of the Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence

In March 2023, after more than 1,000 technology workers called for a pause in training the most powerful AI systems, including ChatGPT, UNESCO urged countries to fully implement its Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence without delay. This global ethical framework, unanimously adopted by UNESCO’s 193 Member States, provides safeguards for addressing the associated risks.

At the time of the original announcement, more than 40 countries were already working with UNESCO to develop national mechanisms for AI governance based on the Recommendation. The statement also outlined plans to hold a Global Forum on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence in Slovenia in December 2023 and present a progress report.
