According to a report published by the Smart Learning Institute of Beijing Normal University on 8 May 2026, the Ministry of Education’s Educational Management Information Center and the Cyberspace Administration of China’s Data and Technical Support Center recently issued a joint letter recognizing a BNU submission as an ‘Outstanding Educational Case for Safe and Beneficial AI’. The submission was entitled ‘Cross-sector Collaboration for Integrated Competence and Literacy Development among Innovative Talent in the AI Era: The Youth AI Innovation Initiative’.
The two centers jointly launched the call for cases, focusing on safety governance mechanisms, ethical standards and innovative applications of AI in educational settings. It aims to identify and share replicable practices, promote compliant and safe uses of AI in education, and support high-quality educational digitalization.
Also known as the Yuanzhuo Initiative, the program is supported by the project ‘Key Technologies for Intelligent Interconnection and Computing in Learning Environments: Research and Application Demonstrations’, part of China’s National Science and Technology Major Project for New-generation Artificial Intelligence. Its core team includes Li Yanyan, Zhang Jinbao, Zeng Haijun, Chen Hongyu and Da Ting from BNU’s Faculty of Education, and Huang Guijing from Alibaba Cloud. The team has developed systematic practices in AI education and safe, beneficial uses of AI.
The institute reports that the initiative was launched by BNU in cooperation with Alibaba Cloud Intelligence Group. It integrates young people’s technical competence and ethical literacy, addressing gaps between technology and ethics and inequalities in educational resources. The team proposed ‘cross-sector invitational learning’, developed an AI education ecosystem linking industry, universities and research, and built a shared AI educational resource platform. Through Alibaba’s charitable youth cloud-assisted learning program, it brings cloud computing capacity and courses to rural areas. Its ‘courses–community–training camps’ model incorporates data compliance and technology for social good into projects based on real-life settings. According to the source, after six years the initiative has reached numerous schools across China and benefited hundreds of thousands of teachers and students. It has also published a collection of Chinese teenagers’ AI innovations for international audiences and developed a network connecting regional collaboration with global dialogue, offering practical experience for cultivating responsible innovators who understand technology, value ethics and recognize governance responsibilities.
