On June 4th, the launching ceremony of the Chinese version of “GEM Report 2021/2” and “China’s Progress Report on SDG 4-Education 2030” and the International Symposium on High-Quality Development of Education was held in Beijing. Mr. Wang Jiayi, the Vice Minister of Education, PRC, and Ms. Stefania Giannini, the Assistant Director-General for Education at UNESCO, attended the ceremony and delivered remarks. Prof. HUANG Ronghuai, UNESCO Chair on AI in Education, Director of UNESCO INRULED, was invited to attend the meeting.
The 2021/2 Global Education Monitoring (GEM) Report, a flagship publication assessing progress towards education targets within UNESCO’s Sustainable Development Goals framework, has been translated and published in Chinese by the Educational Science Publishing House. This edition delves into the significant role of non-state actors in education and their impact on global education targets. It emphasizes the need for policymakers to carefully consider the relationship between the public education system and these actors to enhance governance and foster cooperation in all educational forms. Furthermore, the report provides insights into the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic on education and offers a glimpse into the future of education in the post-pandemic era.

Prof. Huang Ronghuai emphasized the need for profound consideration of how to promote sustainable development of rural education through educational transformation. He highlighted the urgency to address the setbacks, learning disruptions, and digital divides witnessed globally in recent years. Prof. Huang highlighted that China is willing to share practical experiences and successful cases of promoting high-quality rural education with the world via all sorts of international exchange mechanisms.
